Area description
The Industrial Area of i2CAT is focused on introducing innovative broadband Internet-enabled services, communications and tools around the Factories of the Future concept, allowing the Industry to develop advanced distributed manufacturing and controlling processes, and sharing virtualised resources as a means to improving efficiency and competitiveness.
The area is also fostering collaboration and R+D+I initiatives between companies in the same value chain, creating innovation platforms, leveraging knowledge and technologies from international research communities and defining high value-added intercompany services.
Industrial Ring (Anella Industrial)
Description and goals
Since 2007, the Industrial Ring comprises a telecommunications infrastructure and a services and applications platform pioneered in Europe that connects industry companies, research centres and universities with a high performance bandwidth.
In 2013, it began working as a real multi-operator infrastructure using broadband services between companies. The logistics and media sector have been introduced this year.

Annual achievements
Anella Industrial is attracting international interest, as demonstrated by the visits of delegations from Moscow (April 2013) and Derbyshire (October 2013) to know about the model of this innovation infrastructure.
Throughout the year Anella Industrial grew with new 29 members, including the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya. With these new partners, coming from different markets, such as manufacturing, automotive and audiovisual, the Industrial Ring has currently more than 70 members of different typologies: network operators, supercomputing centres, car manufacturers, software developers and engineering companies that provide services in the whole automotive value chain.
These are currently the main partners:

Smart Factories
Currently focusing on Horizon 2020 targets such as Factories of the Future (FoF). The objective of the Industrial Area is to advance the concept of the Smart Factory, to adapt new solutions in the field of ICT in order to integrate and improve production processes in industry:
- Providing solutions for plant monitoring and remote control.
- Making predictions and analysis in real-time to avoid problems.
- Offering new services to improve the efficiency of the new application and software costs.
- Promoting the use of high-capacity networks that allow fast and secure data transmission.
- Enabling the ability to access supercomputing resources.
